About the Foundation

The Jorge N. Buxton Microsurgical Education Foundation

The Jorge N. Buxton Microsurgical Education Center is one of the crown jewels of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Formerly The Temporal Bone Laboratory, the Microsurgical Education Center opened in September 2004 with generous funding from The Ambrose Monell Foundation and other supporters. For six years, the Microsurgical Education Center has offered unparalleled excellence in innovative and delicate microsurgical training to resident and fellows from each New York Eye and Ear Infirmary specialty, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. With state-of-the-art technology and advanced resources that draw upon the full medical training expertise of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, the Microsurgical Education Center is the premier facility of its kind that bridges the gap between academic medicine and the operating room.

The Jorge N. Buxton Microsurgical Education Center is entering an exciting new phase with the establishment of the Jorge N. Buxton MD Microsurgical Education Foundation. Under the executive directorship of Douglas F. Buxton MD and stewarded by leading New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s surgeons, the Buxton Foundation will further help to institutionalize the instruction of ophthalmic and otolaryngeal microsurgery and foster a culture and environment of experimentation, innovation and excellence in all aspects of microsurgical instruction. The Buxton Foundation is a strategic part of The New York Eye and Ear’s dynamic growth strategy of investments in new talent, expanded facilities and enhanced research programs to ensure leadership in the hospital’s core specialties for a third century of service.

The Microsurgical Education Foundation will advance on an international level best-practice microsurgical education and cross-disciplinary relationships, including conferences and international symposia, publication of leading newsletters and manuals, and visiting professor programs. The Foundation also will help secure funding for new equipment purchases and facilities upgrades, as well as potential endowed professorships and microsurgical resident and professor scholarships.

Dr. Douglas F. Buxton, the medical staff and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary executive leadership are fully committed to the Jorge N. Buxton MD Microsurgical Education Foundation and its mission to advance The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai as one of the premier centers for superior post-graduate and fellows training, with comprehensive hands-on experience to prepare surgeons for the complexities of the operating room.
